Why do bands and musicians need public liability insurance?

Band members and musicians – like any other occupation – are exposed to certain risks.

One is the risk of third-party injury or property damage. If an audience member gets hurt at one of your gigs, they could (in some cases) hold you responsible. The same goes if their property gets damaged.

These are just examples. The right insurance helps cover a range of unique risks.

Our insurance solutions cover a wide range of performers

  • Bands/Musicians
  • Orchestral Groups
  • Choirs
  • Children’s Entertainers
  • Dance Performance Groups
  • Theatre Performance Groups
  • Cultural Performance Groups

What insurance do bands and musicians need?

Public liability cover

Public liability insurance helps protect you against claims made by a third party – like an audience member. It can help cover the costs of injury and property damage (including legal fees).

Professional liability

If a third party faces a personal injury or property damage while acting on your professional advice, they could hold you responsible. Professional liability insurance helps cover the costs of advice-related claims.

Venue hire cover

Accidents happen. Protect yourself against financial loss in the event that you or your band members damage a venue you’ve hired for practicing or performing.

Frequently asked questions

Bands, musicians and group performers – like choirs or orchestras – aren’t required by law to have insurance. However, some venues may need you to have at least a public liability policy before you can hire them for gigs or rehearsals.

It depends. Your premium can vary depending on the number of band members, the number of attendees at gigs and performances, and the type of cover you need.

We offer online insurance for bands and performers. Speak to a Marsh broker if you’d like to discuss your options before you buy.

This depends on which level of cover you buy.

Our 7-day, 30-day and 90-day gig cover options only provide cover for Australia and New Zealand. Our Platinum cover option, on the other hand, offers worldwide coverage (except for USA and Canada).

Not sure which level of cover you need? Speak to a Marsh broker to discuss your options before you buy online.

Your certificate of currency – also known as a certificate of insurance – will expire on the same day your Policy expires. You’ll need to purchase a new policy once your existing cover expires.

Claims can be stressful, but – as the world’s largest insurance broker – we strive to make the process straightforward.
