We highly recommend you consider insurance for personal trainers (or PT insurance). Personal trainers should consider insurance to protect themselves and their clients. While not required legally to operate your PT business, you may be required to show evidence that you are insured as part of your contract with clients or business partners (e.g. to operate out of a premises).

Given the risk of personal injury is high in personal training, insurance should be considered to help protect your business, livelihood, employees (if you have them) and clients.

As a minimum you should consider the following types of cover:

  • Public liability: Covers personal trainers if a client is injured or suffers property damage as a result of your actions. It can also cover legal fees if you are sued by a client.
  • Product liability: Covers personal trainers if a client is injured or suffers damage due to a product you sell or provide (supplements or fitness equipment).
  • Professional indemnity: Covers personal trainers if a client claims that they were harmed as a result of advice or guidance you gave them.

However, you may need other types of cover depending on your circumstances, for example, if you rent or own a commercial space or studio to run your business, or you have a separate business vehicle. It’s a good idea to talk to a broker who can help you work out what insurance you need.
